This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 17 first grade students in a high poverty school in Washington, DC, where over 99% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. The children's needs are very diverse, as they operate at varying skill levels, and it is our goal at my school to find resources to make sure everyone's needs are met. We also always need basic supplies to keep our classroom running smoothly. Students' and families' abilities to contribute are limited so we look to donors to fill in the gaps.
My Project
We have lots going on in first grade! In addition to learning to read, write, and do math, we are learning how to be good citizens and friends.
These materials will help foster the sense of community on our room.
The paper pockets are useful to display student work so members of our school community can see what we're doing in our room. The hearts are part of our Closing Circle ritual; every day, students say when a peer "warmed their heart" by doing something kind and get to drop a heart and fill our bucket. The Wishing Well board will help students focus on those whom we need to wish well (ex: absent students' names will go in the center). The birthday chart will make sure we don't forget anyone's special day (and the markers and packing tape will help me set that up!).
