My classroom is in one of the top 10 most diverse elementary schools in the country. My students come from diverse cultural backgrounds and low socioeconomic households. Any given year, the students in my classroom speak a total of three to eight different languages, qualifying them as English language learners or dual language learners. This year, 2018-19, I "looped up" with my 2017-18 preschool students, which means we moved up to kindergarten together. This was a very special opportunity, because I had already developed positive relationships with the students and their families, and our class had already created a caring, cooperative learning environment.
My Project
The shape and size of this rug will allow my whole class to sit comfortable for many different learning experiences, including academic and social-emotional.
The most important aspect of my classroom is creating a community of learners that communicate and work together, and this rug will play an important role in that.
Every morning, we gather for a morning meeting, where we share our celebrations, wonderings, and concerns. Together, we learn letter names and sounds, the magic inside books, and explore math and science through real-world application. This rug will allow us to learn as a whole class, work in small groups, and discuss in pairs.
