My students need a new rug where they can congregate for community meetings, lessons, read-a-loud, and independent work - a new rug that is inviting and cozy and does not present a trip hazard.

My Students

My 6th grade students attend public school in a large urban district. They are diverse culturally, socio-economically, and academically.

My students have a remarkable commitment to building an identity-safe and supportive community within the classroom.

From the first day of school to the last, we meet daily on the rug as a community for our lessons, read-a-loud, independent work and community meetings.

The rug is a location and symbol for community in my classroom. When we meet on the rug, a tone is set - one of serious work, mutual support and trust.

My Project

Every room in my school has a rug - a place where students gather to learn, share, grow, and most of all, to build community.

When students walk into the classroom, there is a good feeling, a vibe, one that invites students in.

The rug welcomes them and creates a sense of belonging, and a feeling of wanting to stay. This is important, because when my students walk in the door, they engage in rigorous academic work for long periods of time.

It's important that I convey to my students that their sense of belonging and well-being is a priority and that the space in which they learn and share is comfortable and appealing. Having a new rug helps me to create that space that welcomes my students every day.
