The students in my class are a diverse group of children who share the common desire to learn.
These young children are excited about school and motivated to grow and learn, despite the fact that over half of our school population is considered economically disadvantaged.
My first graders don't all share the same home language, due to our large population of English Learners, but that doesn't stop them from learning and playing together or motivating and cheering each other on.
My Project
Social and emotional learning is a critical part of childhood development. This learning plays a significant role in students' lives as they learn, grow, and mature.
These cooperative games, books that focus on social and emotional skills, open-ended play materials, and sensory items will help my students to build their understanding of the importance of relationships, self-regulation, and essential social and emotional skills.
These materials will allow my students to practice this social and emotional learning in an authentic and safe space.
Cooperative games like Yeti in My Spaghetti and Friends and Neighbors are critical to teaching turn taking and good sportsmanship. Books such as The Invisible Boy and Spaghetti in a Hot dog Bun illustrate key social and emotional skills in relatable ways. The open-ended play and sensory materials like Pattern Play Puzzles and Pixy Cubes allow students to self-regulate their emotions in the classroom.
