Classroom Comfort Corner

Help me give my students a classroom comfort corner with calming sensory items, some noise cancelling headphones and alternative seating options (classroom stools) to support more focus, and books to help them learn healthy coping skills. Thank you!

My Students

I teach in a small town in Southern Utah. Although COVID-19 has made their early school years challenging, they come to class and courageously engage in new learning activities everyday. During these challenging times, I have seen how my students are developing the life skills of dedication and persistence. It is so rewarding to see them celebrate their successes as they learn and grow throughout the school year.

My Project

Due to COVID-19, all of my students are experiencing unusual stress and trauma which has increased their needs for more social-emotional support. In order for academic learning to take place, it is essential to help students learn healthy coping skills. My hope for this project is that I can provide my students with a safe space in the classroom, complete with sensory items and literature where students can take time to self-regulate and be ready to learn. In addition to this safe space (a.k.a. comfort corner), it would be beneficial to have additional items (such as alternative seating, noise cancelling headphones, bubble timers etc.) that could be used anywhere in the classroom to help student calmly transition from the safe space back into the classroom learning activities. More than two decades of research confirms that when we nurture the social-emotional needs of students, there is also a positive impact on learning. I am eager to give my students a more comforting environment where they learn not only academics but also healthy coping skills. Thank you for your support.
