My students have sensory needs that impact them throughout the day. Many of them are on the Autism Spectrum. The adults in the classroom work together as an amazing team so we can focus on what each student needs at the moment he/she needs it while minimizing time off task.
Academic expectations are important and learning will happen when students are in a an enriched environment where they feel safe.
All students can learn and I work hard to find a way to meet each one of my students unique learning style. Students in my class learn by using hands-on materials, real-world tasks, and personal connections.
My Project
A classroom carpet will allow my students the option of sitting or laying on the floor to learn, read or collaborate with peers, maybe even play a game! The floor seats and lap desks will allow them to safely use chromebooks and workbooks while using flexible seating options.
We all learn differently, my self-contained class benefits from sensory input, which is enhanced by sitting/laying on the floor but we don't have a carpet!
My students love to lay on the small mat I have, but it is only big enough for one at a time. Having a carpet would create a whole new area for learning, sensory input and peer interactions. As a child I loved to lay on my belly to read a book and I remember my classrooms having carpet areas for this to happen. I hope you can help me give that same opportunity to my students.
