It is imperative that children in today's classrooms have access to up-to-date technology in order to be adequately prepared to function in our computer-driven world.
The school in which I teach is not a Title 1 school, so it does not receive funding to acquire educational resources for the classroom.
A majority of the children come from middle-class, hard-working families. This year, my class is made up of 22 first graders who are fun, energetic, and eager to learn! There is a wide range of reading and math abilities, and each child has a unique learning style. Regardless of my students' individual differences, however, I have noticed that every child in this class prefers to learn through games and hands-on activities. This is also a class that loves to read!
My Project
With today’s students growing up and learning in a technology-driven world, teachers are challenged with presenting information to students in ways that will “hook” their interest, as well as keep their attention. However, it can be quite a challenge to individualize instruction with limited access to up-to-date technology.
My students will soon receive 6 iPod Touches, thanks to the generosity of Bill and Linda Gates, as well as a number of donors to this website. Unfortunately, the iPods do not come with chargers to keep them running. In order for my students to use the iPods (and thus practice a variety of 1st Grade skills) frequently, we will need chargers.
My group of First Graders are a bright bunch who love to read! The children read at their tables or on the carpet. We have one beanbag that the students share. I would love nothing more than to add to our learning environment by supplementing it with Bean Bag Chairs in which the children can read, write, and use the iPods.
My students will be able to practice a variety of skills on their iPods, as well as be better equipped to succeed in this technology-driven world.
However, it will be necessary to have chargers to keep the iPods running. In addition, students will be even more inspired to read, write, and learn with a few Bean Bag Chairs to sit in as they work. Can't you see it? A classroom full of students engaged in their own work and in comfortable seating....a "Classroom Cafe."
