My students are awesome, but they haven't discovered the joy of reading, or that books can open their minds and help them become better readers, writers, and thinkers. I am hoping to change that this year by using high interest novels to awaken this in them. This is the year they will love books!
I teach English I to 9th grade students and they are amazing!
It truly is a joy to teach them everyday! At the 9th grade level, students work through multigenre units that focus on both reading and writing skills. The practice of these skills help prepare them to be successful on the end of the year state assessment, more specifically known as the STAAR test, and in future classes and college programs.
The specific school I work with qualifies as a Title I campus, and I work closely with students from low socioeconomic areas. Many of my students have not found the joy in reading, and appear to crave a book that will awaken the love for reading. I intend to give them a book that they can cling to, learn from, analyze, and absorb into their educational journey. I believe this can be done and I have a school that supports me.
My Project
The class set of Legend along with the novels Enclave and Partials, will be used to teach, practice, and master the essential 9th grade skills in English I. It is my hope that utilizing a fresh high interest novel will engage students in the learning process, rather than using an older book that may not be relevant to them or their generation.
Legend will be used in class. Students will read individually, in pairs, and with groups, while analyzing specific components, such as characters, plot, and point of view. They will also have a chance to participate in literacy circles, in which they take charge of their learning and academic discussions about the content of the book, along with personal and real life connections to the novel.
It is my hope that the novel Legend will trigger their joy for reading, which will cause them to want to read the other books in the series (Prodigy and Champion), along with similar style books (Enclave and Partials) for their outside projects.
These donations will help supply books that will engage students, and help them master the necessary skills to help them be successful in not only their standardized test, but in their college and career areas as well.
We need students to read, and these high interest novels will help engage students in the learning process, as it is more engaging and relevant to their young generation.
