My students need high interest novels to improve literacy, comprehension, and vocabulary. The class set of Legend novels will be used to work on essential reading skills.
Many of my students have yet to discover the joy of reading. It is my desire to mobilize my students to success by "unplugging" them from technology and instilling the ability to stretch their imaginations.
Currently, our school has an extremely low rate of passing the state mandated assessments.
As a school, we have challenged ourselves to increase our passing rate by over 15%. Because we are a Title I school, students can't always afford to purchase their own books, and we cannot purchase new current sets. Because these novels are high interest they often are the first ones borrowed at the library.
Offering these books in my classroom, will provide an additional resource for students who want to pick up a book to read. Students who read have better vocabulary, are better writers, and are better critical thinkers. Currently, our students do not read for fun. We want to help them realize the value of reading.
My Project
In 9th grade, we focus on reading and writing skills to prepare our students for the successful completion of our state mandated English test. The class set of "Legend" books will be utilized to hone their reading skills, expand their analytic skills, and structure their writing processes through class guided activities. The other Legend books will be available for six weeks book projects and leisure reading as students complete work in class.
By funding this project, our students will see that reading can be fun.
Their minds will be challenged, and they will have the opportunity to read a book that interests them, as opposed to dated literature with which they cannot connect.
