Ms. Marika from Oakland CA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Classroom Books - Learning to Love Reading

My students need books for our classroom library - both literature that meets students interests, life experiences, and literacy levels, as well as nonfiction about U.S. History (most of our current nonfiction texts are 20+years old).

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school serves students in grades K-8 in Oakland and provides rigorous academics, quality teachers and a safe and supportive learning environment. Our students and their families live in the middle of East Oakland, where high rates of poverty, gun violence, and drug use mean that our students face a multitude of obstacles on a daily basis in their pursuit of education.

Despite the challenges that many of our students face, they are incredibly motivated to succeed, and our school is one of the highest performing middle schools in East Oakland.

Many of our students come from Spanish speaking families, and over 30 percent are English Language Learners, which gives them a unique bilingual and multicultural perspective on their own education. Our goal is to prepare our students with skills necessary for success in high school and college.

The 8th grade Humanities classroom is a space for students to grow and clarify their voices. They need to cultivate a love of reading, build literacy, and grow their critical thinking and analysis skills.

My Project

These materials will be used for students to read! The existing 8th grade library is extremely scant, with books (many of them damaged) quite distant from students' interests and experiences.

Cultivating a lifelong love of reading in a 8th grade classroom is vital to the futures of our our students, as they will be moving to high schools in a year, and without significant growth in their reading levels, they are in danger of slipping further behind.

Around 60 percent of our students currently read multiple grades below grade level - but good books can change that. Many of our language learners (~30 percent of our kids) are hoping to be reclassified as English Proficient before the end of 8th grade, so that they can take electives in high school, and are no longer tracked throughout their school careers.

We need books, books and more BOOKS! Our titles include The Crossover, Dear Martin, The Hate U Give, Jerusalem: Chronicles from the Holy City and many, many more. We will use these books for students to read independently, for students to form small group literature circles, for student presented book reviews, and for close reading of certain history texts as a class. These new books - poetry, graphic novels, classics, realistic fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, drama - will dramatically help our students LOVE reading!
