My Project

Unsurprisingly, student learning and achievement has decreased from 2020. As I try to keep students up-to-date on the grade-level information they are expected to know, I don't want to kill their love of learning or their ability to engage. Books are the solution.

The best and most effective tool for learning in any subject - especially English - is to read, and if we want kids reading then we need books that will interest them.

The books on this project are handpicked to be featured on our "Bookflix" display and are meant to capture students' attention as well as spark interest in any of the pictured titles. "Recently viewed," a list of books I have read recently, has things like "Etiquette and Espionage," the story of a Victorian-era girl who is sent away to finishing school only to discover it also trains ladies to be assassins. On the "new release" list are books like "Five Survive" by Holly Jackson or "Scattered Showers" by Rainbow Rowell. The "top 10 today" books features "All My Rage" by Sabaa Tahir, "Nothing More to Tell" by Karen McManus, "I Must Betray You" by Ruta Sepetys, and others.

On a teacher salary, I can't buy all of these new and highly-rated books, but with your help, I can provide them to my students. Since students read their chosen book weekly in class in addition to 20 minutes of daily at-home reading, the availability of interesting books is critical to their success. An interesting book can change disinterested students into readers. And once students are reading, their proficiency and ability in all subjects will increase.
