Classroom Book Tasting

Help me give my students a variety of books where they can see themselves depicted for independent classroom novel studies in any given semester as we do not have a school library at this time.

My Project

The young men at my school are a phenomenal bunch of students with varying interests and abilities. As their English teacher, I aim to bring to life every piece of literature we read, whether in class or at their leisure. Multiple things need to happen to get them interested and foster a love for reading.

Students, particularly male students, must see themselves depicted as the protagonists or main characters in fiction and nonfiction literature to foster a love for reading.

In addition, having reading materials readily available for the students to choose from while encouraging reading independently as goals are set both in school and at home is a bonus, as parents/guardians may not have the time or interest to take the students to the library.

In addition to the books selected, I desire to pair with a librarian to host a Book Tasting to introduce various genres and authors students may not otherwise encounter. Intentionally pulling authors/topics of interest with varying reading levels to ensure every student is considered and included. The Book Tasting will serve as an attention-getter and a bridge to foster a lifelong love for reading.
