Classroom Book Clubs-Memoirs

My students need young adult books that inspire them begin writing their own narrative. Each of these books are memoirs that I have chosen to help motivate and encourage them to think about their own story.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have the best job in the world. Is it the easiest job? No. Is it a stress-free job? No. Are the pains, frustrations, endless meetings, and impossible standards worth it? Yes, because my kids are worth it. I have the amazing opportunity to spend my day with kids who make me laugh and challenge me to be a better person and a better teacher. My school is a title one school and I want to make sure that all of my students have engaging and interesting books to read. I've envisioned my classroom to be a place where my students see themselves achieving things that they never knew were possible.

Many of my students admit that they've never read a single novel in their 13 years of formal education.

They have spent their entire high-school careers 'fake reading'. Studies show that reading and writing skills are directly correlated with success after high school. I want my kids to have a love for reading and to be able to say that they achieved something in my classroom that they never believed was possible.

My Project

This initiative will change the lives of students for this school year and for years to come. Students will have an opportunity to read real stories that engage and interest them. This will allow a safe space to have discussions about their own unique stories. I will also incorporate writing opportunities for my kids to drive their narrative writings.

This classroom library opens doors for discussions, reflections, and a deeper levels of connections within my classroom.

This project will be the starting point for my students to experience reading and writing about topics that are relevant to their lives.

I hope that the stories in these memoirs will allow them to connect with themselves, each other, and the authors.
