My Students
"What are you reading today?" is a common question voiced from the mouths of my beautifully diverse group of students. In preparation for meeting this groups' needs, I attended a conference by Donalyn Miller this past summer that addressed the need for exposing students to literature that reflects and honors their lives. This inspired me to join #classroombookaday, a social media group for teachers to share book titles, lesson plans, and success stories. I was hooked!
I have read a book EVERY DAY, as part of our morning routine.
The kids look forward to gathering in our reading corner to share a story. We laugh, tear up, applaud, discuss, and enjoy this community time. My principal watched this routine one morning and said, "I was pleasantly surprised at how engaged your students were during your read aloud." He frequently comes into the room to see what titles I've selected. We love our book of the day!
My Project
Exposing students to diverse texts lets students connect to characters and settings from backgrounds similar to their own. Through our daily read aloud students develop empathy for others. We build community discussing and dissecting the texts looking for common themes, supporting the standards, or just for the pleasure of reading.
Students have listened to me read books such as "The Yellow Star" and "Last Stop on Market Street," when we started a Civil Rights unit.
Books such as Memoirs of a Goldfish or My Mouth is a Volcano produced loud laughter which is an amazing way to start the day.
