Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember when you walked in to your 6th grade classroom? Hopefully, it was colorful and so welcoming that it made you want to work hard everyday! When my student's faces light up, it makes me happy! Receiving trimmers and other supplies will hopefully excite them about learning!
Most times they are excited to come to school but often times it depends on what is going on with them at home.
We have a great school site, where everyone is positive and welcoming and we are like one big family and that helps the students get through the days of they are having a hard time. My feeling is that if the teachers are happy to come to school the students will be too. One of the things that I think is very important is a beautiful classroom environment. Providing things like trimmers will allow the students to feel welcome and confident in their place to learn. A welcoming classroom environment also affects their moods, ability to form relationships, and their effectiveness in work.
My Project
Imagine your very first day of 6th grade. You're very nervous, wondering who is in your class and what your teacher is like. Thinking will there be a lot of homework? Test? Will I make friends? but then you walk in and all that goes away because your classroom is warm, welcoming, colorful, and just plain awesome. When you look around you see beautifully decorated walls with trimmers, that are ready to hang your work on and organizational tools that make you want to work and have good behavior so you can use. This is what I want my students to experience. I want all of their worries and home stuff to not be a concern while they are here at school. I want them to have the opportunity for the day to be about them and their learning. Providing a beautiful environment is essential to social and emotional development in the classroom. Items such as library pockets, encourage students to be organized which is an essential tool that they will use throughout life.
This project will make an impact on my student's learning which will then benefit them throughout the rest of their lives.
With the myriad of things teachers must do everyday, examining the physical environment can easily be overlooked. Yet designing a good space benefits everyone. In peaceful classrooms where there are tools like library pockets, everyone feels welcome and set up for success, and those who use the space feel comfortable and and have the ability to take ownership.
