My scholars are ages 5-10, grades K-4. We are a public charter school in south Minneapolis, just a stone's throw from the airport and near a neighborhood where a large percentage of people identify as latinx or come from homes where Spanish is spoken.
In Spanish class, scholars are thoughtful, creative, and love to explore the Spanish language through hands-on activities and experiences!
They are interested in learning about different people and places where Spanish is spoken and the food, music, and art that the Spanish-speaking world brings us. Since some of my students are learning Spanish for the first time, most of our activities are bilingual.
Our school emphasizes H.E.A.R.T. values: Hard Work, Excellence, Always Try, Responsibility, and Teamwork. Scholars know that we are a community, and that what makes us different, also makes us stronger. We work hard every day to grow our brains and help make the world a better place!
My Project
Both the mobile tray organizer and the laminator are basic classroom supplies that my classroom is sorely lacking. Our materials -- like flashcards with high-frequency words, posters, and homemade games -- are used by nearly 400 kids each week. This means that in order to keep the materials in good condition for all students, I need to laminate them.
Furthermore, we need a better system to ensure that their work is stored in an easy-to-access and organized place, to maximize time dedicated to learning!
In our short 40-minute class, each second is a valuable opportunity to learn. From week to week, it is important that students are able to keep their work in a safe place.
