Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my mathematics classroom, we learn math in the context of living in the reality of our lives and community. It is exciting, challenging, and very rewarding to teach middle school math to my students. They are passionate advocates for themselves and immensely challenged by the circumstances they face. Many are new immigrants, English language learners, Special Needs students, and from low-income families and neighborhoods. Often they come in believing that math is not relevant to their lives. Some of them have harsh realities and challenges just surviving, let alone thriving.
They inspire me to be my best and to raise my capacities to inspire them to work hard and learn that they can master learning, master math, and thrive in this world with consistent focused work.
I am not satisfied with the status quo and that is what I work to inspire in them. The rewards of making a difference with these students really hit home and left me moved and inspired. I find myself often crying when I am really being with them.
My Project
Classroom basics are super important when you do not have them. Pre-sharpened pencils are one less thing for my students to worry about so they can focus on doing the important work of learning.
Students will cheer the arrival of these important learning tools into our classroom.
When we have plenty of pre-sharpened pencils and a dispenser in the classroom students have what they need at their fingertips to get to work and learn. We will further set the mood for studying with child safe essential oils. With your partnership we can do everything to remove any barrier from learning.
The plastic folders will hold assignments for students that were absent making it easy for them to find what they need on their own supporting their self-reliance in life. Sanitizing wipes our to keep all of our surfaces clean so everyone stays healthy and in school. Multiplication flash cards will allow students to independently master these important math facts fluently.
