Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Geometry & AP Calculus in a public high school in the Mission District of San Francisco. Our student population is mostly Latino, and almost 20% of students are English Learners. Our entire school qualifies for free lunch. Over 20% of our students qualify for Special Education services.
Every day my students impress me with their ability to think critically about difficult questions and challenge each other to learn more.
We work in groups most of the time and students ask engaging questions and make sure to explain their thinking clearly and patiently. I love my job. Every day I'm surrounded by high-energy people, with great senses of humor, who love to laugh.
My Project
If you are hungry, it is hard to focus on anything else. Every day I get asked if I have food because my students show up to class hungry. Some healthy granola bars would help my students by giving them a small snack, which can sometimes be the difference between passing or failing for the day.
My hope is that students can be successful in my math classroom, no matter what materials they are able to bring with them.
The resources I am asking for will provide all of my students with the materials they need to succeed. Many of my students have difficulty focusing during tests or quizzes. For this reason I am asking for table dividers which will allow them to not get distracted by what is going on around them.
