I teach a self-contained special education life skills class comprised of students with mild intellectual disabilities. My students participate in both classroom and community-based instruction. My class is focused on increasing student knowledge and skills necessary for everyday living. We work on goal-setting, decision making and problem-solving, communication, healthy lifestyles and relationships, personal safety, career, and vocational skills, and academic skills based on need. I teach core subjects including reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
My students are finding their place in the world!
They are figuring out what life is all about and where they fit in the world. They are figuring out who they will grow up to be, and how they will be able to live independently and contribute to their community.
My Project
My students with exceptional needs benefit from doing hands on learning activities. Classroom basics like pencils, glue sticks, and construction paper get used on a daily basis in my classroom, so halfway through the school year, we are running low!
These resources will give my students the opportunity to show their learning in multiple ways.
My students will use pom poms, popsicle sticks, and coffee sticks in task boxes where they practice vocational skills by sorting and packaging items. The drawers and buckets will be used for students as part of a vocational practice task to sort items into. Paint, paint brushes, pallets, glitter and tape will be used by students to demonstrate their learning through making posters and other art projects.
