My students need markers & colored pencils to do the art assignments that correspond to their literature stories, and dry erase markers for math class problem solving.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If children aren't introduced to art, where will we get our future engineers, architects, designers, inventors, artists and builders? Art increases academic success and develops important motor skills. Man was born to create and a life without art is a poor one.
I have a class of 22 5th graders who love to create.
I have noticed that when they are drawing, coloring or making pictures to represent the stories they read, they are the most well-behaved. They are so focused on what they are doing, they get lost in their creations.
My students often create pictures at home to bring to me as a gift.
Anytime I start to ask if they want to do an art project, the hands shoot up before I even get finished with my question.
Last week when I gave them a math booklet for test review, they couldn't wait to decorate the cover; they like to make everything their "own".
My Project
We often draw and color pictures to represent a book or story we have read. When teaching them about reading, I tell them that they need to have pictures in their mind during the story, like movies. This helps their understanding and comprehension of the story. After the story, we always make a picture - this not only shows me that they have understood the story, it also gives them a chance to do a hands-on project instead of just testing.
In my math class, each student had as individual marker board. I give them problems to do, then they hold up the marker boards and it is instant assessment for me. If the answers are correct, I know that they are understanding the math concept. Since we have math every day, our markers run out quickly so we are always in need of dry erase markers.
My students will feel so special when I show them that a kind donor has furnished them with art supplies.
I have always furnished the art supplies, but they are quickly dwindling. Many of my students cannot afford to bring their own colored pencils or markers. My marker box consists of mostly "brown" markers now.
Once a month we take a field trip to the mountains to learn about the environment and nature -they are required to draw some of the plants, bugs and trees. The pencils will greatly help.
