As a teacher of students in low income/single-parent family homes, I work with students who are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. The students in my classroom have a range of different abilities.
Living in low income/single-parent family homes may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may deprive them of life experiences many of us see as "typical".
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Having a classroom pet encourages empathy, compassion, respect, and responsibility for another life. By having pets in the classroom students learn these skills and can then apply them to their daily lives.
I am requesting a fish tank and the necessary supplies to take care of our growing fish and so that we are able to bring new fish into the classroom.
By having a classroom pet, students are learning socio-emotional and leadership skills, and academic skills. We will also use this opportunity for hands on science lessons about life cycles and animal habitats. This allows them to be intrinsically motivated about what they are learning.
