My students need an expanded classroom library. These books will update our current selection with even more diversity in people, places, and subjects.
This school year, I teach a group of first-grade students ages 6 to 7. These students live in an area of southwest Florida that is often not noticed for accomplishments. My classroom demographic is made up of a majority of low-income families as well as immigrants. The students are predominantly Hispanic and are bilingual. By promoting different types of learning, including visual learning, these students will shine. I want to offer as many different types of learning to help my students succeed.
I want my students to have opportunities that promote learning and success.
My Project
In this project, I have included a variety of books with diverse characters, authors, and subjects. I have also added books including STEM-related topics and multi-cultural readings from all over the world. Our last project for library books, my students have loved all the diversity in reading about women, civil rights, and immigrants. There has been a list of classroom library suggestions for books my students would like to read. I have spent time researching and speaking with other teachers the books they have included in their classroom collections and have added some of those as well. As our library continues to grow I would like to add more books to match the students in the class.
