A typical day in my classroom involves Science experiments, sharing of ideas, writing about our learning and expressing our creativity. Doing these things requires movement, noise, and energy, something my students all have. I love helping them discover the world while culminating their knowledge.
My students are from a high poverty school with a vastly changing demographic from only ten year ago.
They love to learn, read, and discover the world. We expect greatness from our students, and as a staff we do all we can to help them achieve this. My students work hard each day to achieve their goals. Through grant monies our school was able to purchase Chromebooks for students. The irony is that while now our students can "virtually" go anywhere in the world, due to socioeconomic challenges they are not able to experience the vast richness of our area. Even though we live in the Pacific Northwest, just a short distance from the ocean, many of my students have never felt the cool Pacific waters on their toes or walked the trails of the last temperate rain forest..
Teachers spend hundreds of dollars each of their own money to cloth, feed, and give our students basic supplies. We could use any help that you are willing to provide us.
My Project
The amplification systems will allow our students to hear the CORE teaching that is being presented. The following benefits would be achieved: ensure teaching material is heard clearly by all students, wherever they are in the classroom; facilitate better student-to-teacher and student-to-student communication; improve student confidence during presentations; create more positive student behavior.
Students with good hearing still recognize only 71 percent of the speech they hear. In poor listening environments, auditory processing falls to less than 30 percent. Students who do not understand key words or instructions may find it difficult to catch up, leading to frustration and off-task behavior (Palmer, 1997). In today's high stakes testing we must allow children to hear all of the content being shared otherwise their ability to meet the rigorous standards will be greatly hindered. The students will be able to use the system also as they present their own culminating knowledge.
The funding of this project will simply allow students to hear the content that is being presented so they may fully understand the concepts being taught.
Imagine only being able to hear every third word of a presentation. Would you be able to follow along with the conversation? I know I would not. A disengaged student is not learning. But when we allow them to fully hear in the classroom, genuine meaningful learning, real life connections, and excitement about school increase exponentially.
