Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students basic needs must be fulfilled in order for them to excel in academics.
I teach at a Title I school where over 70% receive free or reduced lunch, and over 80% are English language learners.
They are vibrant and full of curiosity about life and growing up, yet confused and struggling to make it through their adolescent years. My classes are made up of about 70% Hispanic students. The rest is made up of Filipino and white. Most speak a second language at home. Despite these added challenges to growing up, they try their very best every day to learn something new.
My Project
I've already asked for some of these materials not too long ago, but to be honest, I did not ask for much because I didn't expect it to get funded so easily and quickly! I am now asking for more similar supplies -- we received the items already and they LOVE them, and want more! I'm now asking for more similar fidget toys, more puzzles and brain teasers, as well as a couple tools for students to use in the classroom.
I'm asking for two different categories to improve my classroom and my students' experience: logic puzzles and toys, and organizational tools.
After building a small collection of toys on my own, I have found my middle school students really love to try and figure out varying logic puzzles and I love to see them try and solve it on their own. Every year I have several students who are extremely energetic or have ADHD who need to keep moving constantly, leading them to tap their pencils, move their legs frequently, or get out of their seats. These things can cause a distraction to others, and the fidget toys and stretch bands I requested give these students an alternative that does not draw attention to themselves, as well as helping them focus.
The file boxes are extremely helpful for keeping all of my classwork and homework organized, and makes it easier for students to access the materials in case of an absence. Lastly, I requested easel paper which is great for making classroom posters like vocabulary words, unit concept maps, et cetera, but also great for group work and presenting their information to the class. They love seeing their own work on display and also find it useful to have important information and key concepts posted around the room.
