My students need basic everyday materials, such as pencils, markers, and erasers to complete their in-class assignments, group projects, and labs, a place to store their science journals, and a positive learning environment.
My students are a melting pot of ideas, personalities, backgrounds, and views of the world. Each one comes from their own world filled to the brim with ups and downs no one else might know about it. Every day these kids come into my classroom full of curiosities and questions waiting to be answered. They have a knack for finding a way to tie our lessons back to their lives without me even trying whether it is bringing in a rock during our Earth unit and working to identify it or finding out how many simple machines they use in a day.
Unfortunately, my kids come to school barely having their basic needs met.
We have a breakfast program which alleviates some of that hardship these kids face. When they are coming to school wearing the same clothes almost on a daily basis, it is hard for them to come prepared with simple, basic materials like pencils, markers, notebooks, etc. Their abilities to thrive despite the hardships they face at home inspires me on a daily basis.
My Project
My students come with good attitudes and curious minds, but lack the basic materials to complete in class work, labs, and projects. We do a variety of projects from posters and brochures to models and machines. The majority of supplies I do have are broken and don't work properly, like scissors.
When there are almost three hundred students using the same materials all day, every day, they also wear down quickly.
One thing we strive for is accuracy in our models and diagrams which are required to be properly illustrated which means we use colored pencils and markers often. The Crayola bulk markers and colored pencil sets will ensure my students are able to unleash their full creativity. However, to even begin our assignments and projects, each student first needs a sharpened pencil. By having AmazonBasics pencils, I can have the leave of mind each student has a pencil available to them. I have been asking my school to replace our broken, missing half of it's cover pencil sharpener since the end of last year. My students frequently have to leave the classroom in order to simply sharpen their pencil. With the addition of a sturdy X-ACTO electric sharpener, my kids will spend less time finding a working pencil sharpener and more time in class. I'm also asking for Elmer's glue sticks, construction paper, erasers, batteries, and magnetic letters.
We do a variety of review games including whiteboard races and several games requiring teamwork and speed. With the pack of Azteca dry erase markers, more students can participate. The Learning Resources Lights and Sounds Buzzers will allow us to enhance our speed test games and keep bring a new edge to review time.
A positive, bright room helps foster the positive mindset we strive to achieve on a daily basis and the materials will open the doors of creativity for my students.
