Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I feel that students learn more using a hands-on approach than by following the book on a daily basis. Unfortunately, many (or most) of my students do not come from homes that can afford to buy basic geometric tools for their sons and daughters. For this reason, I have been spending at least $300.00 per year for classroom supplies that most schools (or districts) expect students to provide for themselves. Learning is deeply affected by what you do to learn. I feel that students learn much more content, and retain it much longer, when they actually do things with the mathematics they are learning. For this reason, I strive to make my classroom standards reflect doing, rather than reading about. I have found as many as five different ways to teach a theorem that most teachers teach only using a proof, a concept that is being stressed less in the current curriculum, and readings.
