Have you ever gone to a library to study but found yourself distracted? Did listening to music help you keep focused? This is the idea behind our project, acquiring MP3 players with teacher approved music so students have the option to listen while they work.
We are a unique middle school classroom!
There are 48 seventh and eighth grade students in our open double classroom. I teach math and science and my teaching partner teaches language arts and social studies. Currently we are in our third year of working together as a class. I have taught many of these students since sixth grade!
My Project
Working in a Montessori classroom is unlike any other experience in middle school. Students have many responsibilities in the classroom from maintaining the learning environment to monitoring their own progress through curriculum.
As learners we know that there are many tools available to help you concentrate while you work including silence, quiet music, check lists, and graphic organizers. As teachers we can provide many of these tools for our students, but allowing music for concentration can be difficult. If we play music for the whole class then those who prefer silence are uncomfortable. If we ask for silence, then those who need music for concentration struggle to keep focused.
I have requested six individual MP3 players for the classroom, which will allow the teachers to provide music for our students on an individual basis while at the same time allowing us to monitor the type of music they listen to.
Please help us keep our community on track!
It will not only help the students currently in our classroom, but future students as well! We can't wait to share Chopin, Miles Davis, and Claude Debussy with our students.
