My Students

My students in the Tri-City area are curious and bright, and so many of them are bookworms! They can't get enough of the library and love spending time cuddling up with good books in the morning and during their recess time.

They especially love reading classic books--the stories that their parents and grandparents read to them when they were younger and that have touched their hearts.

They talk with wonder about Where the Wild Things Are, Shel Silverstein's poetry, the magical worlds created by Roald Dahl, and the beautiful county scenes that E.B. White brings to life in Charlotte's Web.

I love the opportunity to provide students books that they connect with and that they love!

My Project

One of my goals for this school year is to emphasize classic literature that our grandparents and parents loved, that we loved as children, and that the current generation of children will also find very special.

Reading classic literature teaches children that across time and space, the human experience is universal.

Love, friendship, acceptance; these are things that we all strive for, no matter the time period that we live in. There are classic stories that teach these lessons so creatively and efficiently that generations have enjoyed them, and my students deserve the chance to experience these words and tales just like we did.

Shel Silverstein's poetry is both goofy and sentimental. Judy Blume writes candidly about the trials and tribulations of growing up. Janell Cannon's story books feature beautiful, intricate illustrations and morals about the importance of family. These books, and so many of the others on my wish list, have captured the hearts and minds of so many children with thoughtful pictures and beautiful words that so perfectly capture the wonder and the fears of childhood. They assure our children that they are never alone in the way that they feel. These stories encourage empathy in our children, as well as strengthen their literacy skills.
