Classic Literature to Challenge Learners

My students need a class set (25 copies) of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain.

I teach 8th grade Language Arts to students at every ability level. I have one "honors" level class that is comprised of mixed-ability students who desire challenge and rigor in their studies, but need extra support and resources to rise to those challenges.

Many of the traditional resources that are housed in our school are adequate for a traditional or low-level student (ie. textbooks, workbooks and young adult fiction), but they fall very short of the challenge that honors students need to expand their vocabulary, their understanding of literary themes and their reading world-views.

I want to prepare my honors 8th grade students for college preparatory and AP classes in high school by introducing them to classic American fiction in middle school. Without this background experience they will not truly be prepared for the rigors of the advanced high school curriculum that will put them on a college track. I taught Tom Sawyer at a previous school and the students loved the adventure, the mischief, and the teenage romantic drama involved. I loved it because it challenged their reading comprehension and analysis as we investigated the historical and social context of the story.

Your generosity will be just one more support that my students need to be placed on a path for success in 8th grade, high school and beyond. By not shying away from the classics, they will become students of literature and the world.
