Classic Literature for Independent Readers

My students need classic literature that will spark their imaginations and enable them to understand the past with more empathy.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students want to find themselves in a variety of books--books they relate to, books that spark their imaginations, and books that just feel weird and unusual. My students have significant independent reading time, and recently, they have begun asking for classics. I have many contemporary and YA books on my shelves, but a number of my students are also interested in reading options that, even 40 or 50 years after publication, will continue to engage them.

My students come from all over the South Side, and they bring their experiences, their dynamic energy, and curiosity, and their drive to learn and grow to the classroom each day.

My students are open and speak freely in our school, which makes the teacher-student relationship an honest relationship to facilitate deep learning.

My Project

After a few years of independent reading, many of my students are starting to feel like deep, successful, curious readers. Some of these students crave books that will transport them to other times and places and ways of being.

These books can help my students broaden their perspectives as they read outside their comfort zones.

These books are all accessible and relevant, but many of my students have never grappled with questions of childhood in the same vein as Wendy and Peter Pan, and while many of my students are immigrants or 1st generation citizens, reading about German immigrants in the 1920s in "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" will help them understand the immigrant experience with a wider lens. And, for my students who love action and adventure, titles like "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "Sherlock Holmes" will pique their interests. These books vary widely, but that means that these classics will also speak to a wide variety of independent readers.
