Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, inspiring, and need some new materials to work with to continue their learning. They are primarily Hispanic and come from a very low income area. Most of my students started speaking Spanish when they were younger and didn't start learning English until they started Kindergarten.
This makes learning a challenge at times.
Our school is a Title I school that has over 90% of our students receiving free lunch. The families at our school are required to volunteer at least 20 hours a year to help support the school.
My Project
My students have been reading chapter books in my classroom since Christmas and have now asked me for more. I really don't have enough chapter books to read with groups because I only have one or two copies of the books.
I would like to get sets of books for my students to read during guided reading.
The students have already read several books about the Holocaust and survival, and they are starving for more. When my groups are finished with the books, I sometimes give the students to the book to keep and take home. This is very special to them.
