SDHS is located in downtown San Diego and hosts an incredibly diverse community of learners. We strive to build informed and effective communicators, critical thinkers and problem solvers, collaborative workers who contribute to, interact with, and lead in the worldwide community, and well-rounded individuals who recognize and address local, national, and international responsibilities.
SDHS has three academies within it, and I teach students in the School of International Studies and the School of Science and Technology.
We are a Title I school with students who live in this urban environment, including a high number of homeless children.
With all our students as part of these smaller cohorts, they are able to learn from one another and have created a student-centered culture of kindness, social consciousness, and academic excellence.
My Project
We are in a refreshed civil rights movement. As we delve into our novel unit, I am seeking modern, relevant texts to pair with the classic, To Kill a Mockingbird. This is important.
With your help, the novels, The Hate U Give and All American Boys will be provided as options for students to read, analyze, connect with, and write about as they learn about civil rights history in this country and dissect what civil rights means today.
These riveting novels about young people working through their own emotions, community connections, and societal expectations while violent and unjust acts happen around them bring attention to many issues my students face regularly.
With a diverse population, some of my students personally understand what it means to be targeted, stereotyped, and live cautiously. As they all become increasing aware of immigration issues, movements like Black Lives Matter, gender discrimination, the role of individuals in power, and other civil rights related causes and problems, it is vital that they are given a safe forum to learn more and express themselves. These novels will open that door.
