L.U.C.H.A. (Learning in an Urban Community with High Achievement) is entering its third year in existence. As a small school in the Alum Rock school district we are providing a community of low income and predominantly second language learners a school community committed to high expectations and engaging and relevant curriculum. I will be teaching L.U.C.H.A.'s first ever graduating class of 5th graders this fall. And I am excited to continue their stimulating education with novels that will really grab my students' attention. My class consisting of roughly 30 students, brings to school unique experiences of being new comers to this country, struggling to learn a language at the same time as the content taught in school, and contending with a wide variety of distractions that make academic achievement seem like a low priority. In order to both prepare my students for the rigors of middle school and ensure that they are life long readers and learners, I want to provide with texts they can relate to, stories that will excite them, and novels that can provide a firm basis for instruction of a variety of topics. The scripted curriculum provided by the district is many things, but engaging and relevant are not high on the list. Thus I am seeking to acquire class sets of texts that can lay the foundation for in depth study of both reading strategies but also, science, math, writing, and social studies extensions. Your donation to this project will help to provide fond memories of favorite books to classes of 5th graders at L.U.C.H.A. for years to come. Please help my students to remember exciting novels instead of a dry reading anthology!
