I would like to have a class set (20) of dictionaries that are geared for second and third grade students. Having an age appropriate dictionary will encourage students to look up unfamiliar words on their own, which will broaden their vocabularies. I am a third grade teacher in a gifted magnet program. I have 20 students. My third graders love reading stories, especially core literature! Gifted students are curious about the meanings of new words, and will often go to a dictionary on their own to learn the meaning. I provide my students with many opportunities to read quality literature. As part of their reading, I also help students learn new vocabulary words to deepen their understanding of the reading and to expand their own knowledge. However, this is where the problem starts in my classroom. The dictionaries we currently have are geared more toward fifth and sixth grade. The definitions are written so that a third grader (even if he/she is gifted) cannot understand the meaning. Often, the words used in the definition prove more challenging than the actual word itself! The dictionary then becomes a useless tool to them. They end up frustrated and still not understanding the word. Having age appropriate dictionaries is so important for these kids. Dictionaries are not just valuable tools for teaching meanings of words, but they are also important tools for teaching parts of speech, spelling, syllables, and word origin. Using a dictionary geared to their age level will encourage my students to discover and understand word meanings on their own. When students are able to discover information for themselves, the knowledge becomes much more meaningful and is more likely to be retained.
