My Students

My students are public school pupils with big dreams. They come from all over New York City, some commuting two hours each way, to attend classes at a performing arts school that trains them in one of six studios: drama, vocal, instrumental, dance, film, and visual arts. They are from a diverse range of backgrounds, some are immigrants, some are on government assistance, and all are incredibly driven to succeed.

I teach advanced history courses to students who not only have artistic talent but are willing to take on a rigorous and time-consuming college-level course, in addition to the hours they spend each day honing their artistic skills.

Not only do they learn historical facts and details in these courses, but they learn to think analytically, improving their research and writing skills, building on the skills they learn in their other classes. Materials I hope to obtain through DonorsChoose will help make these lessons more engaging.

My Project

With a set of Chromebooks, I could have students begin a task in class, plugged into their Google Classroom work, share with each other and me, and fine-tune at home.

Familiarity with technology is important, and having students work with technology to perform their class tasks would fulfill that.

The Chromebook set will remain in the classroom, rotated between classes. NYC classes have a limit of 34 students in a class, and several of my classes are at that limit.

Students who are at home sick for a lesson can easily collaborate with their peers who are in class, seamlessly.
