My students are a group of diverse 7th grade students who live outside of Birmingham, AL in a small rural town. Most students and parents struggle to provide supplies each school year. Calculators can be considered a luxury supply.
My students range from high level learners to students who are in need of remedial basic skills math.
No matter their learning level or style, all of my students are hard-workers, and it is a joy to see them work through the steps of a problem until they discover a solution.
My Project
Students thrive when they are in a CALM learning environment. By providing my students with a class-set of matching calculators, I can create that sense of calm for them because first and foremost, students will not have to worry.
Most of my students can not afford a calculator for school and home.
Secondly, equipping all learners with the same materials ensures equity throughout the classroom--everyone can be familiar with the same commands and buttons when inputting math calculations.
Therefore, students will be better able to teach and learn from each other because they will be able to use common language when discussing how to solve a problem.
In conclusion, having a class-set of calculators will help establish a routine, which will further help students succeed as we continue throughout the school year.
