My students need class set novels (Hunger Games, Holes, and Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) in order to improve literacy and foster a love of reading.
The biggest challenge my students have is that they are very low readers. By the end of the school year, I want them to not only be able to read at grade level but to actually enjoy reading quality books.
All of my students are considered "at-risk" and come from low income families.
Fortunately, they are in a school with caring teachers and administrators who want to see positive growth in each and every student. We want to see them succeed in school and life with every opportunity open to them.
Unfortunately, many of them do not have quality literature in their homes and so they lack the necessary reading skills that are so important to success.
My Project
Currently, we do not have any class sets of novels so they are missing out on an important skill. I will use these books to give my students a positive reading experience that will broaden their horizons and improve their reading comprehension skills.
I feel that it is important for each student to be able to read and/or follow along in their own book. These students need to have the experience of holding a book, turning the pages and seeing the words come alive as they read.
I agree that reading an actual, physical book is not very technologically advanced but it is an experience that is so desperately needed in our children today.
I believe this project will make a huge difference for my students.
Some of my most vivid memories of grade school are those of being fascinated by an exciting story and interesting characters. Without books in hand, students will not only suffer in their reading skills but in their imaginative skills as well.
