Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach third grade in Redwood City, California in a very low income neighborhood, and all my students are native Spanish speakers. It is my job to bring them up to fluency reading in English. One of the things I do is read aloud to them from a chapter book every day, and I have noticed that when they have a copy of the book in their hand and follow my reading, their level of engagement and comprehension goes way up! I have seen their reading test scores soar, and their sense of being captivated by a good book is significantly increased. I am asking for 20 hardback copies of Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo for my students to use year after year. Thank you for considering our request, and supporting our reading program at Hoover.
