Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a K-8 school serving a very mixed community of personal and academic needs. The school has a large population of Title I families, who tend to lack resources not provided directly by the school.
I am the 8th grade ELA teacher, returning for a second year.
Heavy on my mind is the importance of exposing students to a multitude of text and getting them to engage in reading beyond what is assigned in the classroom. It was evident after our first class trip to the library that the shelves were severely lacking in appropriate literature and nonfiction books for students in middle school.
My Project
My school is beginning the Leader In Me program based on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Teens. We are working to produce leaders in each student on campus through the use of the 7 Habits. This book will help make a solid framework for this program by introducing students to the 7 Habits. The book will also provide detailed explanations of each habit and how living that habit will benefit students now and in the future. Further, this book is a great segue into high school for my eight grade students.
