This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Being a child can be tough. Being a child growing up with absentee parents and little money can be excruciating. As a teacher, we have no control over what happens to our children when they leave us. School should be a place of fun and exploration in a safe space!
My students are first graders from inner city single parent homes.
They do not come to school with the common skills you would expect. They have little or no prior knowledge of things you and I would take for granted.
I want my classroom to be exciting and help catch them up on experiences I would provide for my own children.
My Project
My students love animals! These animals will help me teach them about the life cycles of these critters.
Not much is more exciting to a seven year old than watching a caterpillar turn into a butterfly!
We will watch tadpoles turn into frogs, mealworms turn into beetles, and caterpillars turn into butterflies right before our eyes. These experiences open a world of deep discussion about so many things they may have taken forgranted.
Each student will be able to care for their animal as it changes and develops. They will be able to compare and contrast these different types of metamorphosis, adding awe and wonder to keep them thinking!
