Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Imagine trying to choose a book from a class library where the majority of the books have lost their covers, missing pages, and are written in. This is the class library my students have inherited from previous years. As a result, my students often struggle finding a book to check out.

My students are seventh graders.

Unfortunately, our school has fallen on hard times and does not have the funding available to order books for our students. Additionally, we are located in a high needs community that does not have the means of equipping our students with the materials necessary to meet student needs. Many of my students entered seventh grade reading several years below grade level. However, their hard work is beginning to pay off as their reading levels are gradually improving.

My Project

My goal is to revamp our classroom library with books at various reading levels so that my students will continue to practice reading on their own. My students will be the first to tell you that their reading success is mostly due to putting in the extra effort and practicing reading outside of class for two hours each week. I am so proud of their dedication, but in order to continue improving our reading scores, we need to have books available that will help them reach their goals.

By supporting my class, we will no longer be forced to read books with missing covers and pages.

Your donation will demonstrate to my students that there are people that care about their education and believe that they can meet the goals they have set. You will be providing students with the power to take their education into their own hands by giving them the materials they need to practice reading outside the classroom.
