Class Library- Assisting students with the 25 Book Campaign
My students need 33 book titles such as those from the "Harry Potter" series and the "Lunar Chronicles" series for a great classroom library to expose to help them fall in love with reading and aide in the 25 Book Campaign.
There are some books that are very near to my heart today because I fell in love with them as a kid. My goal is to flood my classroom with books build a diverse and engaging classroom library. Hopefully all my students will find books they enjoy reading, even the reluctant or struggling students.
I teach at a school that has been identified by the state as a school that needs improvement.
The school's population is very diverse culturally and academically. Many of my students are interested in art, sports, or computer programing. Although they are in middle school, many of my students are already disillusioned with school. They are convinced that what they are going to school will be either boring or irrelevant to their lives. Fortunately, my students can also be "tricked" into getting interested and excited about learning. Although my classes were reluctant to read, they really connected to Steinbeck's novel"Of Mice and Men" because they connected to the theme of friendship and had been in situations when they had to make difficult decisions. I would love to give them more opportunities to connect personally with literature and learn more about life, other cultures, and the world they live in.
My Project
In his books series Game of Thrones, author George R. R. Martin wrote, "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one." Having a well stocked classroom library will do more than help my students meet their goal of reading 25 new books this year. It will expand their world view, introduce them to new ideas, help them explore their interests, and learn more about themselves through characters in a novel.
The great thing about books is that they are not used up when they have been read once.
I want to see my students fall in love with reading and get excited about texts year after year. Flooding my classroom with a variety of high interest, engaging texts will help the students that come through my classroom find the right book to get them reading.
