I am a first year teacher within the Tulsa Public School District. Our school has almost 85% of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. My first grade classroom will consist of 20-25 students, coming to me with a variety of reading levels. I would like to get books above, at, and below grade level to address the needs of every student in my classroom. I would like these books to be available during guided reading, as well as independent reading time in my classroom.
My Project
By providing my students with books that are at their independent and learning level, I can help my students develop and grow literacy skills to be excellent readers. This project includes 50 books for the classroom library, and 20 of each: above level, at level, and below level books to be used during guided reading instruction.
My goal is to help my students show 1.5 years of progress on their reading level by the end of the year.
In order to do this, I must provide reading material at grade and ability level accessible to every student in my classroom. I will use these books to lead guided reading to help my students reach this goal of reading growth.
