Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine an urban school with abandoned train tracks and unpleasant factories surrounding it. Our school is located in a high poverty neighborhood where my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of our school. Despite the many problems they face, I am looking to keep my students motivated to master Spanish via meaningful learning experiences and authentic student driven projects.
My students, after facing much misfortune and hardship, have learned to become resilient and deserve to have the same resources others schools have.
My Project
Our class Leopard Gecko, Jupiter, is the highlight of our classroom. For many students who do not have pets, Jupiter is the closest thing they have to one. While he is the protagonist of our student made Spanish books written by our Novice learners, Jupiter also provides an emotional need for many of my students. My students have the opportunity to handle him and share in the responsibilities of taking care of him like any other house pet.
Not only am I able to utilize our class gecko as a meaningful focal point for Spanish writing projects, but he also becomes our agent to cross-curricular lessons in Science.
Due to the success and impact he has had with my kids (and their desire to not let Jupiter live alone), we voted to adopted another Gecko and name her for different planet. Our second class pet will allow for my student to expand their use of the Spanish language for their writing assignments as now they move to writing and developing another character and the use of gender specific adjectives that exists in Romance languages. We can even further practice writing from various perspectives.
