Imagine if you were not able to effectively communicate your wants, needs, or even basic information about yourself to the people you spend your day with. For many of the students in my classroom, this is reality. Effective communication is the key to enhancing their education and quality of life.
The students in my room are receiving specialized instruction in all academic areas, as well as behavior, social skills, life skills, and communication.
The school these students attend is in a low income community, and therefore resources for these students outside of a school setting are very limited. We maximize learning time in my classroom by finding activities for the students that are highly motivating, and turning every situation into a learning opportunity. These students give 150% of themselves everyday, and everyone is cheering for their success.
My Project
Our classroom recently received an Easy Speak station as a gift, but it did not come with a microphone, headphones and batteries. With all of these components, students will be able to practice speech and language with the microphone, and listen to their recording afterwords. Speech is a really tough area for many of my students, but with a motivating tool like a microphone and listening station, I am hoping that speech and language time becomes less of a chore, and more of a rewarding and successful experience.
Many of the students in my classroom have speech and language disorders.
Students with communication challenges often experience multiple barriers to success in the classroom. Disruptive behaviors, inability to ask for help, and social isolation are just a few of these barriers. With a complete Easy Speak station, students will be able to improve on their speech and language goals. Effective communication skills will improve these students' academics as well as their quality of life.
