CLASS: Creating Learning Areas that Support Students
My students need bookshelves to serve as command centers for learning groups. They need magazine organizers, fabric storage, and pencil cases to hold their supplies.
Have you ever work so hard to complete a project, only to lose it before you had the chance to turn it in? Have you ever missed a deadline? Many of my students have experienced this feeling. Seventh grade students are passionate, involved, and oftentimes disorganized!
I teach 7th grade students in an urban area in Ohio.
My school's population is about six hundred 7th and 8th grade students. My students are passionate about what they love, excited about new experiences, and eager to make me laugh every day! I never know what to expect when I walk into our Language Arts classroom! Most of my students come from lower socio-economic backgrounds and oftentimes do not have the supplies they need to come to school every day prepared. Students oftentimes cannot afford the pencil bags, folders, binders, etc. that are needed to keep their school materials organized.
My Project
The materials I have requested will be used to create learning group command centers in my classroom. Many of my students come to class without the necessary materials for success every day. They lack the pencils, pens, binders, and other supplies that are required for class. Locating materials all around the room becomes a class disruption and takes away from valuable learning time. With the materials I have requested, each learning group will have a command center, a bookshelf that holds their textbooks, binders, notebooks, and other necessary materials, to help students with management and organization. Additionally, each command center will have a trash can and a pencil sharpener, eliminating the need for students to interrupt their learning groups by getting out of their seat multiple times during the class period. Command centers will also have group calendars to track due dates for upcoming assignments, thus helping to increase student responsibility.
This project will make such a difference in the lives of my students.
It will create a learning environment with a great flow and organization, which will allow for our class time to be spent on learning instead of on management issues. Students will learn responsibility, organization, and learn how to be prepared and productive members of a group learning community.
