My Students

My Title I students are generally not up to grade level in math. Most of them are totally "math phobic" and have not received a solid background in mathematics. However, we have now generated a sense of excitement and interest in our math classes.

Since our students do not have much in the way of technology outside of school, hands on technology- whether it be computerized learning, using the overhead projector, or using compasses and protractors - generates excitement.

Many students are still weak in their basic facts. Additionally, they can not mentally find square roots, etc. Having a scientific calculator for each student would totally engage them and encourage them to go forward with their learning.

My Project

Our students love anything that is hands-on or technology based. Calculators will allow them to solve upper level problems without getting bogged down in "math facts". It will enable them to focus on the larger mathematical picture. Additionally, it will allow them to manipulate numbers such as "non-perfect" square roots in situations such as involving Pythagorean Theorem and similar scenarios.

This will also allow working problems such as area and volume situations that involve larger numbers.

It will aide in calculations involving scientific notation and will allow cross curricula enrichment with science and with other areas in school as well.
