Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Children need to feel comfortable and in control in order to learn. Help our class stay organized! My students need lasting materials for their classroom.
My students live in an urban neighborhood of New York.
I teach a 1st grade class of English Language Learners. Most of my students have immigrated here from other places such as Africa, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and many other parts of Latin America. Most of my students speak languages other than English at home. In our classroom, we focus on developing the English Language through content area instruction. In other words, I teach all subjects (Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Science) through a lens which focuses on English language development. Our classroom usually maintains a wonderful sense of community and students are encouraged to share and be proud of their heritage.
My Project
Due to our school's small budget, I find myself creating a lot of my own resources for my classroom. I absolutely LOVE designing materials for my students and that definitely won't stop. But, each year, due to wear and tear, I have to make a lot of these items all over again. This takes A LOT of my time and energy...and my students can benefit from every ounce of my time that they can get! I want to invest in some lasting resources so I am requesting an interactive calendar, wooden hall passes, a reusable behavior chart, a mail box system, name plates and name plate covers, a number line, a rewards treasure chest and a few other items of this nature. With these resources, all of my time and creativity can go directly to planning and instruction for my kids! Also, I am requesting a listening center. English Language Learners benefit greatly from books on tape. I have many tapes listening activities, but I don't have a functioning, reliable system!
If you donate to our request, my students will benefit greatly.
They will have an extremely organized and attractive classroom and their teacher will have more time and energy to plan curriculum and lessons. The items included in our request will last from year to year, and will aid all children that are entered into my first grade classroom. Giving these kids an attractive and efficient environment to learn in will help them feel loved and cared for. This helps to lower anxiety toward learning.
