My amazing students make up one of four fifth-grade classrooms in a diverse school of about six hundred students and one of two inclusion rooms. Together, we are part of the largest elementary school in our district.
These incredible fifth graders come to school fully trusting me to provide them with opportunities to grow and succeed.
With working in an inclusion classroom, we have a variety of needs, from low performing academic to behavioral needs. These students deserve a learning environment that matches their needs, creative lessons that challenge their thinking and continuous support to prepare them for the future. It is my goal to make sure I have all of these things in place so they can reach their full potential.
My Project
We have recently found out that the Social Studies standards will be changing for 5th Grade. Our beloved unit on the American Revolution will be handed down to the 4th Grade teachers, and we will be teaching a new unit on the Civil War.
I would like to start gathering books about the Civil War, in hopes of having enough for book groups and research, by the time we need to teach these new standards.
These books cover both historical fiction and nonfiction, allowing students to utilize important reading strategies (text features, characterization, etc.). Book groups have always played an important role in our social studies units, as students are able to take ownership in the books they pick, and practice reading skills while learning.
