Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 11th grade US History in Woodland, California. My project will emphasize the history of people of color in the United States. My students are awesome, hardworking, and come to school with many challenges, but they persist and persevere. I want them to see themselves reflected in the curriculum.

I teach at a school with a large Latinx population and I think there is a ton in these books that will hook them into history.

I have some awesomely dynamic personalities in my 3 sections this year. They bring a myriad of perspectives with them to the classroom, but sometimes struggle with structure academic conversation. This project will give them opportunities to discuss history using an accessible text.

My Project

Congressman John Lewis is a courageous fighter for equality. The graphic novel series March: Book One and March: Book Two gives insight into the planning, the violence perpetrated against Civil Rights advocates and the perseverance and persistence that Lewis and his fellow marchers demonstrated.

I want to use these graphic novels with my students to help them understand that the fight for Civil Rights isn't finished...this isn't something that happened a long time ago and thank goodness there is no more racism in this country.

Now more than ever, students need to see models of how to fight injustice and stand up against oppressors.
